The repurposed Western artillery system that could help defend Ukraine

The war in Ukraine has consumed huge quantities of Western weaponry, with many Nato countries reportedly running low on ammunition.

To try to fill the gap, defence manufacturers Boeing and Saab have begun looking at ways of repurposing existing systems, to give Ukraine hybrid precision weapons at a fraction of the cost.

One of them is a new guided artillery system - watch the video to find out more.

If this happens the nice thing is we have tens of thousands of these rockets in inventory already …. production is basically just a matter of putting the pieces together.

Reportedly they will use the rocket motors from thousands of cluster warhead rockets. Excellent use of surplus equipment. Longer range than GLMRS.

Sounds like Boeing can have thousands of them ready in time for Ukraine's spring offensive.

Ukraine can use all the help it can get at this time especially before Russia starts destroying more than just infrastructure which they are already doing. People's lives is at stake every day and living conditions are getting worst by the day, these winter months ahead is the most difficult time for many throughout the country.

The range is a little farther than GMLRS. I wonder how the explosive payload compares and if they're easier to intercept. Of course, by 2023, Russia may not have much AA inventory left to try to intercept incoming munitions.

Ukraine is becoming a valid proven ground for testing and fast tracking innovative new avenues incorporating existing technology into multiple utilizations adapted to Ukraine's specific needs. The incorporation of launching this small highly accurate glide bomb from existing MRLS rocket system is cheaper than using aircraft to launch it. Thus such hybrid use cheaper delivery munitions will be proven in actual combat against a highly technological adversary the Russians, whose technology is in most former Warsaw Pact countries, who see this new approach as economical as well as politically sound for their own application. Therefore such weapons will make these countries less dependent on Russia and more influenced by Western arms. Also existing NATO countries and others will be very interested in these hybrid weapons since their systems can be easily adapted to use such weapons. Good business for America and Ukraine who are also developing cheaper more robust weapons such as the Stugna ATM.

War is an incredible driver of innovation and Ukraine has the entire west backing it. Russia will not be able to keep up with just Iran and North Korea supplying it.

As for the M26 there are ~100, 000 rockets available for conversion, once production goes full scale Ukraine will have a constant supply of deep strike weapons that will cause extreme challenges for Russian logistics and high value targets like air fields and HQs.

The Pentagon is notorious slow. I mean really slow. They should have been ramping up production of everything (shells / GMLRS) 6 months ago.
